Perfect Timing for Major Gift Asks

When is the best time to Ask for a Major Gift?

Great question!

But there is a BETTER question — when is the time best for your donor to give their gift?

Here’s what’s key.  We need to ASK on the DONOR’S TIMELINE – not ours. Consider these factors.

  1. Our urgency is not their urgency. Give now, we are in a campaign. We have a match until X. We can’t begin until we raise X.  While it is true that having a deadline can help some donors make a decision, most MAJOR donors invest because they want to be part of your mission.  All the time.While you may eager to meet YOUR timeline – it may not be in sync with the donor’s timeline. A certain asset may be considerably more valuable in the future. A big family event is taking time and money right now – and while the donor may have enough to do this gift now – the emotions are tied to the family event – not making a major gift.
  2. Giving decisions are often team decisions. Donors often involve others in their major giving decisions and may have traditions when players come together — Thanksgiving, during the summer family holiday – whatever. Being curious about these traditions lets you craft the best project, and also the best time, to ask for the gift. They will tell you.

  1. Life happens for our donors. As connected as they are to you – as sincere as they feel about your mission – their lives can just get in the way. It’s important to check in and share updates of the project success to get a sense of their continuing interest. It’s also important to watch your mindset. Not being able to meet may well be – not being able to meet. Vacations are a good thing! Are they still interested? “You seem to have a passion for X –would you like to continue to explore the best way for you to be part of making this happen for our school?”  Oh, yes!

 

  1. So, ASK anyway. With limited chances to see some donors, we may feel the need to ask anyway.  “How I wish we would have had more time for you to meet Teacher Smith and tour our new classroom building,” let’s them know there were more steps. Using my 3-sentence ask, ask for your best guess now — “You have a clear passion for science education. You understand that having the right tools and space is key to kindling a passion for science. Would you consider a gift of $100,000 to fund the Science Classroom?  They may well say, “Yes!” If it is more of a maybe, “Would you consider taking a tour with Teacher Smith to really understand what we are creating here?”  Continue the conversation until you are clear (because THEY are clear) that this is the right fit for them.

A giver may well be comfortable and happy with their annual gift.  We are happy to receive it AND explore something bigger, deeper, and different during the course of a campaign.  Perhaps their gift comes at the end of the campaign, or the NEXT campaign. Life-long giving.  This is how major gifts are both repeatable and scalable and continue to grow your success.

The best part of this — with all the focus on what’s best for the donor, you don’t experience any reluctance to ask for their investment. You are simply helping them find their best time to give!

Four Actions for Tackling Obstacles

Now let’s look at how YOU can jump over any Obstacles in your Path!

The Power of Positive DOING

1. Reframe an obstacle. “Not all storms come to disrupt your life; some come to clear your path.” Paulo Coelho said this and I believe it represents some of the positives that have resulted from the challenges of our Covid experience. It cleared the path, if you will, for zoom trainings, meetings and family sharing that only the sheer force of that “storm” could do. Consider that there is a silver lining in all your obstacle.

2. Engage in the Power of Positive Doing. My friend and author, BJ Gallagher, has a book, “The Power of Positive Doing.” I agree that you can actually change your thoughts and attitudes by taking positive ACTION, no matter what you are thinking or feeling. While our mindset IS important – and we should constantly work on our thinking, it can be an obstacle to manage it!  Positive doing helps!

3. Prioritize and Identify your Daily Highlight. In the book Make Time by two Google programmers, Jake Knapp and John Zeratsky, they challenge us to set one daily highlight that we commit to doing each day. I have adapted this to 2 highlights – one professional, one personal – and it is remarkable how this compounds over a month and then a year without feeling like a burden or overwhelming.

4. Adapt vs Adopt.
I’m really proud of my CASE Crystal Apple – bestowed when you achieve excellent ratings at 10 CASE national conferences. We always said CASE – the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education really stood for “Copy and Steal Everything.” To overcome obstacles, I suggest it is more effective to learn from others and ADAPT – not adopt. Your situation may be similar – but invest time to tweak another’s practice to fit your mission, audience and situation. This ADAPTING is a real obstacle jumper!

So now sit down and consider the obstacles you perceive you have to raising MORE major gifts. Reframe them, engage the power of positive doing, identify your daily highlight and DO IT, and adapt what you learn from others.

You, and your non-profit can, indeed, raise transformational gifts!  Thank you for setting yourself up for what is possible!

Being open to “better” even with a Gala Win

It’s the season – galas with silent auctions, live auctions paddle raises – bring your friends…and your credit cards.

I had the joy of being part of the Boys and Girls Club of Newark Gala this past week. Without a doubt the venue was spectacular – a palace! The food was over-the-top amazing, and people clearly enjoyed seeing friends and celebrating the honorees. And the $200,000 goal was met! It was clear that Ameer Washington, the CEO of the Boys and Girls Club is deeply respected and sincerely liked by the donors and friends of the Club.  Congrats!

Now we have the opportunity, and responsibility, to ask, “What can we do to make this experience even better?” Here are 10 questions to ask after every gala….

1. Did you stay on time?

It can be next to impossible to move a room full of people having a good time, but it’s important that we do. To pull from the theater…using hand chimes will trigger folks to move to the next space. Also, here’s the perfect time to enlist board to help by leading the way.

2. What was the noise level in the room?

The sound of happy people can be deafening! Enjoy it and leave people wanting more by mixing single speakers with group activities. The mission moment delivered can be calmer and still very effective. Paddle-rasier MC’s can be down right ear shattering.

3. Did the sound system work?

Sound is a key element for your event and not to be the place to save money. Be sure both the equipment and the people running it know what they are doing. Check it from all points around the room – not just in the middle. Could you understand what we being said or was it muddy? With poor sound, guests will begin to drift away to table conversation not hearing acceptance speeches, or those videos you worked so hard on because they gave up when they couldn’t hear.

4. Do people wait for the gala to give?

Have you promoted a culture of giving at your gala? This may seem fine, but as we encourage larger gala gifts, we promote transactions instead of fostering real giving relationships. Remember a donation is support for a cause – a gift represents feelings between people. Blending gala expectations with the MAJOR gift that will bring your giver the most joy will foster giving at both the gala and a major gift. “I gave at the gala” is not helpful in major giving.

5. What is the experience of the paddle raiser? Was the energetic auctioneer rallying bids an effective strategy, or did it overwhelm some guests?

Look honestly into the faces of the guests during the paddle raise. Are they interested? Wincing at the volume and harshness of the hired leader? Smiling after they are called out for the level they gave? Greeted and thanked by tablemates? How do they feel after participating? Trust me – this can be improved!

6. Did the live auctions engage attendees as we hoped?

“But we get big bids!” you say. I challenge you to talk to the bidders and ask if they really wanted the item, or just wanted to play a lead supportive role for the organization they care about. Would they rather just make a true gift? Can you have these conversations ahead of time? Post gala – ask them how they feel about it in a way that let’s them be honest with you. AND LISTEN!

7. Are you asking for feedback in a way that gives you the answer you want?

For one particularly harsh time master ED, his comment post event was, “I talked to several people who were happy we stayed on time.” Right. Bet cha you asked that question in the way that got the answer you were looking for. As we seek feedback we need to really put away our own sacred cows and opinions and listen with an open mind.

8. Are people leaving early?

This is a powerful sign that you need better time management, sound quality and variety. Note who leaves early and asked them what their experience was with a sincere open mind to hearing from them how they felt.

9. How do sponsors feel?

As with the guests – was the energetic auctioneer rallying bids an effective strategy, or did it overwhelm some guests? As one sponsor representative said to me, “It’s my job to attend these things – sometimes 3 a week. You can definitely feel a different energy from event to event. Some we look forward to – some we look forward to being over!” Ferret out their opinions of what could be better.

10. Are you placing the experience of your attendees over your determination to raise the money?

“We need that unrestricted giving, so these galas are just a needed part of our year.” Be willing to evaluate the REAL cost of the gala in staff time, board pressure to give or get, and be open to change.

In a room filled with our most dedicated supporters, it’s easy to assume that everyone is enjoying the event. However, taking the time to dig deeper may reveal that for some, this is just what you attend when you sincerely care about the mission – what your money does for the kids, animals, seniors, planet, whatever….

Certainly, how you connect with the attendees post event caps off their time with you. Be sure to keep asking, “How do we make you feel special?”

MORE of the F Word

In our journey to inspire generosity, the “F word” takes on a whole new meaning. No, I’m not referring to that four-letter expletive that might slip out in moments of frustration. Instead, I’m talking about a word that’s actually evasive for us: FINISHED! In fundraising, “finished” is a concept that’s as elusive as a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Why? As advancement professionals our work is never truly done. There’s always more needing our attention —

More connections to make,

More gratitude to express,

More conversations to have,

More opportunities to present,

More listening to do,

MORE MONEY TO RAISE! MORE GOOD TO DO!

Yet, amidst the perpetual pursuit of MORE, there are ways to find satisfaction in the feeling of completion – that feeling that comes from DONE!

Embrace the moments of being Finished -

Here are 3 TIPS to help you get more of the “F Word – FINISHED” into your life!

 

Closet

1. Pepper your life with things you CAN TRULY FINISH!  (Bite-sized and occasionally bigger.)This may sound crazy – but I love to do the wash. Folded and back in the closet – FINISHED! I love to rake a section of the lawn. FINISHED. Take 4 files and purge – FINISHED! Notice how this FEELS. Ooooohh..enjoy the feeling. It’s why we add something to the list we forgot to write down just so we can check it off! FINISHED!

2. Take time NOW to create more time LATER. Let me give you an example – a

Closet Clean!  This past weekend my dear friend, Sue, spent 6 hours with me cleaning out my closet! She’s a pro! It was not all fun to be sure, and as she proclaims, “We are still friends!” AND, it will help me find what I need faster EVERY day, pack easier and faster for my speaking trips, and enjoy the calm of the less cluttered space.

The same is true for your desk and office. Taking a Saturday morning or evening is well worth it. Spend some time to gain a bunch of time! Generally it gets messier before it gets better!

3. Strategize Relationship Building: While relationships are enduring, it’s essential to establish structured plans to foster key connections. For me, this means crafting Relationship Action Plans (RAPs) for your top major donors, ensuring regular and ARTFUL engagement. It’s not about getting the donor to the ASK, rather it’s about YOU having the structure to do YOUR part to help your major givers find the gift that is most meaningful for them. Setting aside time to create RAPS takes time NOW, but saves you time scrambling later and creates a MUCH better donor journey.

While not all donors will have complex plans, allocating dedicated time each week for nurturing relationships with potential major donors will give you space and purpose to bring others along.

Stay Aligned with your Life Purpose..

Above all of this – reflect on your overarching life purpose — to be a good parent, to live your faith, to help others be their best selves…. Clarify your vision, and take some action every day that lives it. That’s a good day!

 

Finished!

So, the next time you Find yourself caught up in the wrong F words – perhaps the Frenzy of Fundraising, and MORE, MORE, MORE, Focus on moments of “FINISHED!” Celebrate your successes, acknowledge your efforts, and remind yourself that while the work may never be truly finished, it DOES change lives, lift up communities, champion causes and bring JOY!

But I am a unique snowflake…..

 

I’m just home from the vibrant energy of Toronto and AFP ICON! I hope wherever you were you caught a glimpse of the eclipse. Despite the clouds, the experience of witnessing total darkness and then the return of light just outside the Toronto Convention Center created a powerful shared memory!

My session, “No-Nonsense Must-Haves for Major Gift Success,” held at 8 am on Monday morning, was met with a standing-room-only enthusiastic crowd. A heartfelt thank you goes to my co-presenters and clients, Niki Richardson from TOArts and Terrance Hunter from CFCArts. They shared their real-life major giving adventures. Together, we delved into mindset, giving options, relationship building, and my 3-sentence ask. And yes, we belted out, “People love to give me money!” Who says you can’t learn and have fun at 8 am on a Monday?

Conference days are filled with oh so many conversations. It is evident that you each face unique challenges in inspiring generosity for your mission. But remember, you also possess unique skills, passion, and creativity—ingredients for overcoming any obstacle that comes your way.

Solve your unique problems with your own unique skills...

Let’s zero in on the 5 No-Nonsense Mindset Must-Haves ANY one can experience – no matter how unique you believe you are. These are essentials for unlocking more major gifts:

1. ANY not-for-profit organization can inspire transformational giving:

No matter the hurdles, the size of your organization, your budget constraints, or staffing limitations—never doubt your opportunity to raise major gifts. It’s not about the size of the obstacle; it’s about the size of YOU and your determination to find a way, whether it’s around, over, or despite it. No excuses.

 

2. ANY fundraiser can make a conscious decision to prioritize major gift relationships: You create your life! Make a deliberate decision to allocate more time to nurturing major gift relationships. Cut through the noise of emails, social media, and the allure of the next shiny tactic. With focused effort, just a few mornings per week can pave the way for a thriving major giving program.

 

3. ANY leader can embrace donors as valued partners: Donors deserve a seat at the table. Move beyond viewing donors solely as ATMs. Major donors crave genuine connection and a sense of belonging within your organization. Embrace their desire to contribute meaningfully. As more and more major gifts are made anonymously, recognition is not the key driver – it’s appreciation. Extend a warm invitation—they are eager to engage.

 

4. ANY Board member can lead with their giving:Service on the board is commendable, but it is not enough. A board member major giving success mindset demands that Board members demonstrate their commitment to the organization’s vision through financial contributions. Every Board member can make an investment, signaling to others the importance of philanthropic leadership. No excuses—time AND talent AND treasure.

 

5. ANY one can master the math behind major giving: Understanding the impact of major gifts versus smaller donations is crucial. It takes 400 $25 gifts to equal one $10,000 gift—a stark reminder of the transformative potential of major giving. While events and annual appeals play their part, transformations that are both repeatable AND scalable come from major gifts.  Nurture these relationships with gratitude and clarity on future goals, and watch as donors eagerly ask, “What’s next?”

 

When you find yourself succumbing to feelings of scarcity or dwelling on perceived limitations, remember you hold the power to shift your mindset. Reject the role of the victim, discard the blame game, and instead, approach donor engagement with unwavering belief in your cause’s worthiness. Your success awaits—so SHINE ON!!!

Major gift Coach? Do YOU Deserve One?

Securing major gifts can be daunting and filled with uncertainty. Far easier to create transactional messaging and chase hits, likes and record the “data.” It’s far more tangible. Real relationships are wonderful, but messy.

 

Why should the Sky be your limit..

Whether you’re a seasoned fundraiser or a member of a nonprofit board, the task of inspiring larger gifts and cultivating recurring gifts can feel overwhelming. This is where major gift coaching – by someone who’s BEEN THERE, becomes invaluable.

 

But do you truly deserve to be supported by a major gift coach? After all, shouldn’t we do something that helps the WHOLE team?  What if you leave?  What if it doesn’t work?

 

The best advice I ever received was to absorb as much as possible from others who were doing what I wanted to do SO MUCH BETTER than I was! 2024 Time To TRANSFORM – Here’s how.

Tomorrow is your time to LEAP! Every four years.

Still feeling 2020? Wherever you are in your journey forward from 2020, LEAP tomorrow to TRANSFORM in 2024! Whatever you’ve been down or frustrated about that has changed, is still a challenge, or is still hard…examine that thinking and use LEAP DAY tomorrow as the time to reset and TRANSFORM!

THIS IS YOUR YEAR TO DO IT!

Purposefully move away from transactions and towards relational fundraising…and life.

90% of our happiness is based upon the quality of our relationships

Research tells us that 90% of our happiness is based upon the quality of our relationships.This includes your donors, your colleagues, your family, your friends. Transactions can support connecting – an email, text, birthday card, newsletter, a direct mail piece, social media – but LOOK for ways to take time for phone-down, I-see-you connections. 

One of my clients took a major gift agreement – in person – to get the needed signature from the marketing department head. Sure – could have used DocuSign. But this way they met face to face, got to know each other better, and this deeper friendship has been key in moving a second 6-figure gift forward.

INSIGHT: Opt for creating deeper relationships over efficiency.

 

2. Be your own THOUGHT LEADER.

In this world of SO MUCH INFORMATION it can be easier to simply follow what others say – so called “thought leaders” or “influencers.”  Consider who is sponsoring a message. Are you being supported or shamed. “Good fundraisers, mothers, whatever do such and such.” Check in with YOUR values. Pause and evaluate what you are hearing. Use the unsubscribe key, shut it off, put it on pause if it feels out of sync with your values.

INSIGHT: Lead your OWN thoughts by questioning information for truth and alignment with your values.  

 

3. LEAD with strength and clarity. Provide options but then LEAD with your decision.

Post covid leadership calls us to be decisive and move forward with clarity. With your board, donors, team, kids…. collaboration is fine, but transformation comes by doing your homework, making a decision, and calling for action around your decisions.

INSIGHT: LEAD with strength and confidence.  

 

4. Automate everything you can based upon the steps that need to be taken.

Timeline ALL your events and opportunities to engage and share impact for the year on one spreadsheet. Then put specific action steps into place to delight and surprise your givers. Be sure to have copy proofing, distribution, messaging in place on the timeline. Look for bottlenecks, look for piggy-backing options. Look for whatever can be automated to remind you to take action.

INSIGHT: Automating processes supports you in taking personal action and creates more time for you to do it.

Trends. Tactics or Truths – Focus on Truths

Some things never change.  And that is good.

An inbox overflowing with trends, tactics and what to watch out for now is overwhelming…and a bit scary.

Focus on what you know to be true.

(For me – a fun truth is that a few days by the ocean is so rejuvenating.)

After 4 decades of successfully inspiring major and mega giving as a front- line fundraiser, team manager, and coach/consultant I promise you there are some unchanging truths that bring personal and major giving success.

Foster genuine relationships is THEE most important piece for major donors.

The external environment will impact your givers, colleagues, and family, but they will overcome those influences for the key relationships and things they value in their lives.

When costs go up, turbulence abounds, or challenges emerge, we find a way to still be with family, attend places of worship, and support causes that are meaningful to us. Key to the decisions we make are a few lasting truths.

Truths you can count on in fundraising and life! 

TRUTH #1 Fostering genuine relationships is number one. ALWAYS. Transactions well executed can be part of overall relationships, but manipulation is always felt – even if not realized.

TRUTH #2 Trust STILL must be earned, and it is highly valued. Be trustworthy. This is your most important asset.

TRUTH #3 BIG visions unite and inspire.  That doesn’t necessarily mean high-cost, or broad sweeping. It means clear, and targeted on how you accomplish your purpose better and better. Big donors want big, bold visions but remember that can be fixing a former barrier to service, adapting to new ways to do what you do based on new knowledge as well as expanding your reach to serve more.

Your words reflect your beliefs. Speak as if your giver is sitting besides you - always.

TRUTH #4 Your words reflect your beliefs. Your words are containers of power. How you talk about your givers and colleagues reflects how you FEEL about your givers and colleagues.  This is really quite easy to implement. Always speak as if the person you are talking about is sitting beside you. Will you really say TO a donor, “We’re trying to get you to open your wallet!”  

TRUTH #5 Use data Artfully. Tracking data helps us KNOW our donors and they want us to know them – what they gave last, what is important to them, how they want their relationship to be handled.  But even with annual fund – help your data-driven colleagues see how these people are more than a number or statistic.  And we, as major gift fundraisers, need to be open to data that informs us how to more effectively and efficiently connect with, and serve, our donors.

TRUTH #6 Recognition does not equal appreciation.  For all time – how others value what we do and share that with us is key to our feeling appreciated and every person in our lives is different. And there are some ways that feel key for many. Care needs to be taken to not get caught up in the latest TREND for sharing appreciation – ask your giver, your spouse, your kids – what is meaningful to you!

A quick story – when the founder of one of my client’s organizations retired, the search yielded a horrific replacement, the board failed to act and most of the staff left – including the long-time fundraiser.  Giving plummeted.  A full 18 months later, the Board found new leadership, took charge, hired a new CEO, and recruited the former fundraiser back late in the year. Just hearing she was back – and on the strength of her relationships, giving poured in during December even without a year-end letter or emails or time for many visits!

For as much as we all want to hop on the latest trends – and I am a forever learner – evaluate each from forever truths.  The sunrise and sunset. When you are true to you – when you sincerely value and respect others, when you push down the negative and snarky talk and focus on the gift you want to be in the world –LIFE IS GOOD!
